The purpose of a website is to convert viewers. At the core root of it, whatever your specific goal with a website is, you don’t want people to go on your website, view it, and then leave. Your viewer should leave converted. Whether that be a lead, a client, a prospect, anything, as long as they don’t just leave a viewer.

If anyone tells you that a website is just a “nice-to-have”, ” a way to display your portfolio”, or “unnecessary”, it’s probably because they know a website is actually supposed to bring you leads… So if you’re struggling with getting clients, but you don’t have a strategic website with SEO that is tailored specifically for your dream client, that’s the first place to start. But in order to do that, your website needs to do these 3 things:

1. Your site needs to tell the viewer WHAT you do in the header.

Imagine a person somewhere in the world randomly happened to type in your website URL. They have no clue what your business is or who you are. They happened upon your website and what they need to know IMMEDIATELY is what you do. Let’s look at the header example below ↓

Upon first glance, a viewer’s first thought is going to be “Why should I care?”. It’s not clear why they should care because it’s not clear what you do and how that relates to them. How do we fix this? We’re going to state exactly what your business does and that is going to be the focal point.

In the example above, it is oh so clear what Mary does the second I look at the page. Short and sweet. They don’t need a long paragraph of small text where you mention what you do because viewers aren’t going to waste their time reading that when you haven’t given them any clarity.

2. Your site should tell your viewers who you are.

I say “should” because it’s not a necessity and there’s a way to have a compelling website without this aspect. However, it’s a bit harder. Have you ever heard the phrase “people buy people, not products”? That’s even more true for online service providers. Think about it this way: your clients are going to be interacting with you intimately. They’re going to be giving you money in return for your service and/or products. It might be a guide, a course, virtual assistance, social media management, what have you. But the principle is the same.

You need to build trust in order to build credibility, which in turn will sell your product/service. To effectively build trust on your website, you need to tell viewers who you are. This is why professional brand photos are so important because it’s vital to show that you are a human. You have a face. And you are the one behind this site and the one they will be interacting with. They know what to expect when they hop on a discovery call with you.

Another aspect to authenticity and showing who you are that I think is often forgotten is that your website copy needs to sound like you. It needs to sound like your brand. You can’t take what other service providers’ websites say and you can’t rely on chatgpt to craft your website copy. If you don’t feel confident in your ability to write your own website copy, invest in a copywriter that is mindful to replicate your voice.

3. Your website needs to give your viewers direction.

They need to be told (over and over and over) what THEY need to do now that they’ve viewed your site, read about your packages, learned about your story, etc. Every page and, dare I say, every block of your site should have a CTA. A CTA is a “call to action” or a prompt for your viewer telling them what to do next.

This is where it becomes vital to build a productive sales funnel and have a clear vision of the purpose behind your site. What do you want viewers to do? Do you want them to sign up for a course? A newsletter? A masterclass? Book a discovery call? Once you get a clear vision of what exactly you want your viewers to do, constantly direct them there. This may be an unpopular opinion, but every page should have at least 3 CTA’s.

Viewers shouldn’t have to search for a way to contact you. They shouldn’t have to search for your offers. They shouldn’t have to search for a button to book your services. It should be on every page of your site, in their face, so they don’t have to search at all. For reference, you will see this section ↓ on EVERY page of my website.
